New Affordability Promise at Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver ReStores to Combat Rising Cost of Living

Vancouver, BC - Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver (HFHGV) is excited to announce a new era for its ReStores. In response to the ever-increasing cost of living, this new focus on affordability speaks to the organization’s commitment to serving the community and ensuring that everyone has access to affordable home improvement options.

“We recognize that many families in the Lower Mainland are facing financial strain like never before. We want to do our part to help alleviate some of that stress,” says Persis Ahrestani, Interim CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. “We are committed to being an affordable option for people to find quality furniture, home improvement products, and housing goods while also contributing to the sustainability of the communities where they live.”

This renewed focus on making home improvement more accessible for low-to-middle income earners in the Greater Vancouver region came from careful consideration of the economic realities faced by families and individuals in the community.

For many years now, Habitat ReStores have been a staple across Canada, known for offering a wide range of new and gently used items. This pricing adjustment is one way the organization is expressing gratitude and care to the many ReStore customers who have shown their loyalty over the years, especially during challenging economic times.

“Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver understands the importance of collaboration and strong partnerships in order to achieve its mission,” says Ahrestani. “This revised pricing strategy underscores the need for continued support from partners, donors, and volunteers who share our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

Furthermore, the sustainability impact of the ReStores cannot be overstated. By promoting the reuse of home improvement materials, HFHGV contributes to reducing waste and conserving valuable resources. This has allowed the organization to achieve remarkable results in building programs, surpassing the province's Step Code 3 for all new projects. The dedication to focus on energy software modeling and onsite testing enables HFHGV to design homes with optimized materials that perform efficiently. Moreover, the decision to forego natural gas in all housing projects aligns with the commitment made to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and has set HFHGV apart as leaders in sustainable housing across Canada.

The new pricing approach aligns with this focus and aims to encourage more individuals and families to choose sustainable options while making improvements to their homes.

“Ultimately, the heart of our mission remains centered on building homes, communities, and hope,” says Ahrestani.

Income generated from sales at Habitat ReStores play a crucial role in supporting the organization’s homebuilding projects, allowing them to provide safe and affordable housing to hard-working families in need. To date, HFHGV has 27 three and four-bedroom townhouses in Burnaby, 12 two and-three bedroom units in Richmond, one apartment in Vancouver, two single-family homes in Abbotsford, 19 three-bedroom homes in Mission, and land for 42 townhomes in Coquitlam (ground breaking in 2024). Applications for new partner families are currently being accepted.

Another Successful Coldest Night of the Year Event in North Vancouver!

This was the second time that Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver has run the Coldest Night of The Year event in North Vancouver. But unlike the previous year, there was no snow this time (though we did have to content with some light rain).

On Saturday, February 24th, over 150 enthusiastic walkers and volunteers took to the streets of Lower Lonsdale, showing their support for the work we are doing to create more affordable housing options in the Lower Mainland. Thanks to the support we received, we raised over $35,000, with donations continuing to roll in post-event. We are incredibly grateful for the support we've received from our lead sponsor Neptune Terminals, whose generosity helped make this event a success.

“We were so excited to take the route through the heart of Lonsdale this year,” says Jonathan Fehr, the event director and resident of North Vancouver since 2018. “We had the opportunity to gather in a busy section of the city and to come together in support of those facing housing insecurity.”

Along the way, our walkers were treated to rest stops sponsored by Anthem and Three Shores Development. Incredible volunteers from those organizations came together to provide much-needed refreshments and a chance to recharge.

We were also fortunate to have the support of BC Housing, who sponsored walks across the province with grants. Additionally, we had three incredible route sponsors: 1 Degree Planning, Mercury Transport, TD Bank, and Jet Pet Resort North Shore. Devon Owen Personal Real Estate Corporation came on as a community sponsor. The support of these organizations has been instrumental in helping us further our mission of providing affordable housing for all.

Delicious soup was provided to everyone by Eighties Restaurant, and there was nothing but praise for the cook. We also had coffee donated by Starbucks and timbits and hot chocolate donated by Tim Hortons.

“I need to take a moment to highlight that our volunteers for the day were truly incredible,” says Fehr. “Many of them arrived early to help with setup. The event would not have run smoothly without their support in during the walk and through assisting with tear-down. We are grateful for their dedication and hard work!”

Fehr also gave a special shoutout to all the fundraising teams and individual fundraisers who went above and beyond to raise funds for affordable housing.

“Your efforts have made a real difference in the lives of families in the Greater Vancouver area,” he says.

Did you miss this year's event or not hit your fundraising goal? Donations are still being accepted until March 31st. Visit https://cnoy.org/location/northvancouver and select your walker/team to support or choose our official team, Habitat Hardhomes, to help us increase our impact. Every dollar counts, and your support means the world to us.

Building Community and Hope During the Coldest Night of The Year

Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver is gearing up for another exciting event in North Vancouver – the Coldest Night of The Year, taking place on Feb 24, 2024. Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the heartfelt support of dedicated volunteers, people like Denise, a proud Habitat Partner Family who has been touched by the transformative power of Habitat's mission.

“I heard about the Coldest Night of The Year through Habitat,” says Denise. “I decided to volunteer to put in my volunteer hours as I was one of the lucky ones to be chosen to have a townhouse built by Habitat.”

Becoming a Partner Family

Denise's journey with Habitat began when she found herself living in substandard housing with her children. The organization provided her with an opportunity to move into a safe, new townhouse through the Habitat housing program.

“I heard of the Habitat through the Aboriginal liaison at my son's school. They had sent an email to all the Aboriginal & Metis families, and I filled out the application and sent it in,” explains Denise.

However, the journey from application to acceptance was not without its moments of anticipation and longing. "I would drive by and manifest that I was living there. I was actually a bit obsessed. I just wanted to live in my place so bad and wanted to have neighbors that were also moving forward and have a community that looks after one another.”

When Denise was notified that she was accepted and could move in July 1, she was completely overjoyed.

Reflecting on the broader impact of Habitat for Humanity, Denise emphasizes the crucial role the organization plays in times of housing instability. "Habitat, for me, means a lifting hand, especially in these times where the housing market is wildly out of control, whether it is buying or even just renting."

Volunteering at Coldest Night

When Denise heard that Habitat was organizing their 2nd annual Coldest Night of the Year event, she signed up right away. Thanks to volunteers like her, Habitat was able to host 125 walkers and raise over $36,000. Denise's positive experience last year has motivated her to volunteer again this year.

“I volunteered to help because I am a people person—the more, the merrier—and thought this event is right up my alley,” says Denise. “I liked it so much that I want to volunteer this year, not because I need any more hours, but because I want to give back and because it was such a great group of people putting it together.”

Through events like the Coldest Night of The Year, Habitat not only raises crucial funds but also fosters a sense of community and togetherness. As the event approaches, the Greater Vancouver community is invited to come out and volunteer, just like Denise, and help build a brighter future for families in need. We’re also looking for people to walk in the event and/or donate to the cause.

Stable Housing Opens the Door for New Business Opportunity

Petr Basel — one of our Mission Partner Families — has a diverse professional background. Since immigrating from the Czech Republic in 2009, he has worked in hospitality, ran his own videography business, driven bus around Vancouver, and now has a full-time job with the city of Mission. But more recently, he’s created a side-business in the field of home care and maintenance as a way to build up his savings.

It all started when he was living in Whistler many years ago and cleaning windows. He enjoyed the work and found it to be profitable at that time, so he decided to try his hand at it once again in his new Mission community. Within months, the business (Mission Window Washing) took off and Petr found he was having to take bookings weeks in advance. This quickly led to expanding his services to gutter cleaning, as well.

“I added gutter cleaning because it kind of goes hand in hand with windows,” explains Petr. “In the Spring, I plan to add pressure washing for homes, roofs, and driveways.”

“With this new business, there’s so many homes and buildings to clean, and the advantage is I can be home for dinner and not on the road.”

— Petr Basel

Transitioning Career

While Petr loved his 6+ years of work as a self-employed videographer and photographer, he found it challenging to pursue new contracts in a highly competitive market. There were days where work was plentiful, then times where he’d have no work for months. On top of that, many of his contracts required him to spend a lot of time traveling and away from his family at home.

“With this new business, there’s so many homes and buildings to clean, and the advantage is I can be home for dinner and not on the road,” says Petr.

The Challenge of Home Ownership and An Unexpected Opportunity

Petr says that he loved his time living in Whistler and Vancouver, but found that the soaring real estate prices made it feel impossible to try raising children.

“We liked it in Vancouver, but rent was going up every year,” explains Petr. “We started at $1300 for a tiny old one bedroom. Within five years, it had gone to $1750. For us, this was quite a lot.”

Discouraged and faced with the prospect of an unattainable housing market in Vancouver, Petr considered moving as far away as Smithers to pursue home ownership. But everything changed when he learned about Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and was able to secure a house for his family in Mission.

“I had no idea Habitat was here, at first,” explains Petr. “When we learned about it, we applied. It took some time, but we got very lucky and received housing in Mission. It’s unreal. We have some really good neighbors. We have a playground right in front of our door, and a safe place for our kid. Coming from our one-bedroom tiny apartment to a three-bedroom townhouse with a garage – that’s something we couldn’t imagine.”

“I’m very thankful for everything, and try to volunteer my time.”

— Petr Basel

Changed Lives Change Lives

Grateful for the opportunity, Petr now actively volunteers his time with Habitat whenever he can, and cleans gutters for some of the other Habitat homes in Richmond and Mission at a discounted rate. Every chance he gets, he spreads word about the work that Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver is doing in the Lower Mainland.

“We need more of this for everybody. Housing is a huge issue now,” says Petr.

As Petr continues to see success and growth in his business, he remains dedicated to spreading awareness about affordable housing solutions and contributing to the well-being of his community. His story serves as an inspiring example of how housing stability can make such a difference in an individual's journey and how that can make an even bigger positive impact on the lives of others.

Reflecting on a Remarkable Year: 2023 Top Ten Highlights

As we approach the end of another transformative year, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we've had together in 2023. Your unwavering support and commitment to our mission have made this year one for the books, and we couldn't be more grateful to be part of this community.

Here are a few of our top moments from the year.

1. $5 Million Donation from the Al Roadburg Foundation

We kicked off 2023 with an extraordinary announcement. The Al Roadburg Foundation generously donated $5 million to benefit our 42-unit housing project on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam. This was the largest donation we have ever received. This contribution exemplifies the power of generosity and is an indication of what can be done when we all work together to create safe, stable, and affordable homes for families in need.

2. Community Engagement at Its Best: Coldest Night of the Year Fundraiser

In February, 125 walkers joined us in North Vancouver for the Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser, raising over $36,000 to support for the home we are building in the Baden Park project by Anthem on Mount Seymour Parkway. Sign up for next year and join us on February 24, 2024 as we aim to make an even greater impact together!

3. Reaching New Heights: Habitat for Humanity Step Up Challenge

On October 22, over 100 amazing individuals ran up six iconic towers in the heart of Vancouver, raising over $60,000 for our 2024 project in Coquitlam. That’s 2568 feet and 184 floors! The Step Up Challenge showcased not only athletic prowess but also unwavering support for a vital cause, proving that together, we can make affordable housing a reality.

4. Connecting with the Next Generation Through TikTok

Also in the spring, we ventured into the wide world of TikTok to connect with various members of our community on a more personal level. For more than half the year, our team explored the Lower Mainland, engaging in conversations about housing and affordability, amplifying our mission and building a stronger sense of community with the next generation.

5. Sporting for a Cause: Vancouver Golf Tour and Maui Jim Charity Pro-Am

We were so pleased to partner with the Vancouver Golf Tour as the charity of choice for the 2023 Maui Jim Charity Pro-Am. It was incredible to have so many dedicated volunteers and Partner Families come out to support the work being done at this tournament. Our ReStores got involved too by generously contributing some fantastic items to the auction. All together, this was an exciting time to further our mission through sportsmanship and community engagement.

6. Empowering Women: Benefit Cosmetics' Bold is Beautiful Campaign

Benefit Cosmetics' annual Bold is Beautiful campaign became a beacon of hope for organizations championing the empowerment of women and girls, including us. Habitat for Humanity Canada is one of the beneficiaries of this campaign. The proceeds from every sale at Benefit’s Brow Bars waxing services (for the month of August) were directed to initiatives that pave the way for brighter futures. Our office team lined up to get their eyebrows waxed in support! Check out the video here.

7. Abbotsford ReStore Featured in Commercial

Did you know our very own Abbotsford ReStore was the featured location in a national commercial that highlights the value of the ReStore? Many of our staff came out to help support the production (and if you look closely, you can even see a few rushing around in the background). This video is a great way to showcase ReStores and all that makes it such a special component of the Habitat for Humanity model. If you haven’t already seen it, you can click here to watch.

8. Sustainable Achievements: Environment and Sustainability Award

In the spring, we were honored to receive the Environment and Sustainability award at Habitat for Humanity Canada’s National Conference, recognizing our commitment to achieving Step Code 3 for all new build projects, with our recent 19-unit build attaining impressive results in third-party testing, including lower levels of noise and odour emissions, two of the most difficult areas of sustainability. We were also recognized as a leader in deconstruction, having partnered with the City of Vancouver to create the Rebuild Hub, a project salvaging usable materials from construction for resale through our network of Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

9. Advocacy for Affordable Housing: Collaboration with BC NDP, BC United, and The Green Party

In May, the Habitat for Humanity BC Caucus took a proactive stance in addressing the affordable housing crisis in our province. The CEOs of each Habitat affiliate in BC met with BC NDP, BC United, and The Green Party to raise awareness about the impactful work being done by our seven BC affiliates. We look forward to continued collaboration with our partners in government and the community.

10. The Power of Yes: Wrapping up the Year with a Call to Action

As we wrap up the year, we launched the Power of Yes campaign, urging our community to consider the profound impact their 'Yes' can have on the lives of those in desperate need of a home. With British Columbia in the midst of a housing crisis, community support is more critical than ever. Longboard Architectural Products partnered with us in this campaign, matching every dollar raised up to $20,000!

Thank you to each and every person who has been a part of our journey this year. Whether you are one of our Partner Families, a donor, a volunteer, a ReStore customer, or a supporter in other ways, you have made a lasting impact. As we eagerly anticipate 2024, we look forward to continuing this incredible journey with you as we make affordable housing a reality for more hard-working families in the Greater Vancouver area.

We wish you a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Building Futures: Our Commitment to Affordable Housing and Financial Literacy Education

Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver is committed to providing strength, stability, and independence for hard-working families through affordable housing.

Once our families unpack their boxes, children settle into their new schools and parents adjust to their new routine, we turn our attention to something very important – building the financial literacy skills of our families.

Financial literacy is the ability to understand and use a variety of skills to effectively budget, save and invest. We know that a strong foundation in financial literacy helps achieve future life goals, like reducing debt, saving for children’s education, or planning for retirement.

We want our families to develop these skills, have a healthy relationship with money and begin their lifelong journey of learning. That is why we have worked with several community partners to deliver a yearlong education series for every new Habitat for Humanity partner family.

Last September, we introduced our 9-part Education Series, delivered on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. We partnered with experts from Vancity, Prospera, and the Credit Counselling Society to deliver presentations on a variety of topics, such how to budget, strengthening your credit, investment strategies, to creating your own will. Our families actively participated in these sessions and can access the presentation materials and additional resources on a Partner Family Education Hub we created so families can explore at their convenience.

We appreciate the commitment to learning our families have showed and for the support of our community partners in building the skills, knowledge, and confidence of our Habitat families. That’s why we offered more learning opportunities for our families this year. This fall we hosted a “Mortgages 101” presentation and invited all our partner families in Richmond, Burnaby and Mission. Next up in February, we will be hosting a session on “Earning Extra Income”, a topic of great interest to our families.

Through affordable housing and financial literacy education, our partner families are strengthening the foundation of their future. We couldn’t be prouder to play a part in their journey.

Building a Brighter Future For The Next Generation

Amber, a single mom, wanted to provide the best she could for her children. She dreamed of giving each of her kids their own room and getting them out of the basement so they would have space to thrive. But rent was expensive and finding an affordable solution seemed near impossible.

“I thought that with COVID, maybe the rates would go down and that everything would become really cheap, but the opposite happened,” says Amber. “I knew I wouldn’t be approved to buy a place on my own. But when I saw what Habitat had to offer, I thought I might be a perfect candidate.”

A good friend of Amber’s was part of the Habitat community and explained the process of applying for a Habitat home. This led Amber to apply and eventually be accepted.

“I think I was approved for a home a weekend after Mother's Day,” says Amber. “The best Mother's Day present ever.”

Amber rolled up her sleeves and started on her service hours at one of Habitat's ReStores as soon as she could, completing all 500 hours within a few months. Balancing the responsibilities of a fitness trainer at the community center was no easy feat. But Amber didn't let her demanding schedule deter her. This was not just about meeting a requirement; this was a testament to her dedication to working hard to provide a better life for her children.

A Supportive Community

Amber says that one of the most valuable aspects of having a Habitat for Humanity home is the sense of community it fosters. She is friends with her neighbours, their kids all get along, and everyone feels safe.

We are so happy here, Sometimes, I just walk into this house, and I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh, like, I just love it.’ It’s bright, it’s open, my children are outside playing with other friends, they have like a little group chat. It’s a beautiful opportunity that we have, how the children can play together.
— Amber

The opportunity to move to a Habitat home in Mission worked out in other ways, as well, as it allowed her to continue co-parenting with her ex-partner who lives nearby. The location facilitated a seamless co-parenting experience, ensuring their children's well-being and happiness.

Building Memories to Last a Lifetime

Amber's boys have never had their own rooms before, but now they do and have gained a sense of autonomy and responsibility as a result. She has noticed an improvement in their mental health and the way they interact with others. The community atmosphere of the Habitat homes surrounding them also allows them to make friends easily and enjoy their time outside, just like Amber did when she was a child.

Additionally, Amber says that her son, Liam (12), has had an excellent experience at his new school. At first, he was quite shy and nervous to attend, but over the last year his confidence has grown significantly and this summer he was nominated for the school’s Jubilee Award, an award that celebrates student leadership abilities.

“One day the principal calls me,” says Amber, “and she tells me that they are going to nominate Liam. And she said to me, ‘He’s a quiet child, but he has such a strong presence and sets such a good example for the other kids’, and I thought that was just amazing. That just shows how comfortable he is there and how he’s coming into his own self."

This award not only recognized his leadership qualities but also highlighted how the supportive community has positively impacted his self-esteem and his ability to fully be himself.

More Than a Home

Amber's story is a testament to the life-changing impact that Habitat for Humanity has on families. It provides not only a physical home but a sense of security, community, and a brighter future. Amber believes in spreading the message about Habitat's incredible work, as it offers hope and a hand up to those who may feel stuck or in need of assistance.

I am so grateful. I still volunteer and I even put a team together for the Step Up Challenge. My friends and I fundraised for that. I love doing races and stuff like that. So that’s like right up my alley.
— Amber

Amber's journey exemplifies the transformation that is possible when a community comes together to support one another, proving that with determination, support, and the right opportunities, families can truly build brighter futures.

Habitat for Humanity Step Up Challenge Raises Over 60K

On Sunday, October 22, over a hundred people gathered to raise support for the construction of more affordable homes in the Lower Mainland. The Step Up Challenge was an exhilarating experience that brought participants to the heart of downtown Vancouver, allowing them to ascend six iconic towers, covering a staggering 2568 feet and 184 floors. Over $60,000 was raised at this event, all of which will go toward the construction of 42 town houses in Coquitlam in 2024.

The challenge offered different levels of participation, from climbing all six towers to tackling three or even just one. The event's culmination at The Stack's rooftop deck added an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie, creating a unique opportunity to showcase not only athletic prowess but also unwavering support for a vital cause.

Participants were encouraged to set individual fundraising goals, with a suggested target of $2500, allowed everyone to be a part of the new build initiatives and contribute to raising awareness about housing affordability issues. This collective effort to tackle a critical issue like affordable housing demonstrated the power of community and the impact that can be achieved when we come together.

The event wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of sponsors who believed in the cause. Hudson Pacific Properties served as the Shotgun Start Lead Sponsor, and their contribution was instrumental in making this event a reality.

Axiom Builders, Odlum Brown (Tannis Calder Portfolio Manager), IntraCorp, Schneider Electric, and Ark & Mason also played significant roles as Partner in Climb Sponsors, and Omicron took on the role of the Community Bell Ringer. Their support was crucial in ensuring the event's success and further highlighted the commitment of local businesses to the community's well-being.

Additionally, we’d like to thank Innovative Fitness for sponsoring the warm up activities the morning of the event, RBC for sponsoring the t-shirts, and DoorDash for sponsoring food at the afterparty. GnuSante and Organika were also important sponsors, providing delicious snacks for our swag bags.

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous use of several key buildings from Hudson Pacific, Oxford Properties, Cadillac Fairview, and Polaris Realty. Thank you to all of the property managers and security staff who came together to support this cause.

Finally, we’d like to mention the generous door prizes that were given out at our event from the following partners:

-        Vancouver Canadians

-        The Keg

-        Vessi Shoes

-        Top of Vancouver Revolving Restaurant

-        Hershel

-        Elmans Pickles

-        New Balance

-        SFU

The Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver Step Up Challenge was more than just a fundraising event; it was a testament to the power of community, determination, and the shared belief in creating affordable housing opportunities for those in need. As we reflect on this remarkable event that took place on October 22, it's clear that the legacy of hope, strength, and empowerment created that day will continue to benefit our community for years to come. We applaud everyone who participated, sponsored, or supported the cause, and we look forward to seeing this incredible community effort grow in the future.

Affordable Housing and Indigenous Empowerment | Roxanne’s Story

In honor of National Truth and Reconciliation Day, we are proud to share the inspiring story of Roxanne, an indigenous counsellor and Habitat homeowner. Roxanne has dedicated her life to empowering indigenous youth and women, and her journey exemplifies the transformative power of secure housing.

The Importance of Truth and Reconciliation Day

As we observe National Truth and Reconciliation Day, it's crucial to recognize the systemic barriers that indigenous communities face. Secure and affordable housing is often out of reach, making stories like Roxanne's not just uplifting but necessary. Roxanne's journey serves as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of secure housing.

"Being selected for a Habitat Home was such a blessing. It felt like I won the lottery. It’s life-changing, not just for me but for my kids, too. It’s such a beautiful process, and I feel so grateful." - Roxanne

For a mother of three like Roxanne, the housing market can be tough. "When there’s 30 people applying, and I have kids, I was always at the bottom of the list," she says.

Partnership with Habitat

Prior to becoming a partner family with Habitat, Roxanne was living in Tsawwassen. The rent was high, but she made the commitment to care for indigenous people like herself in the city.

"Part of my job is having hard conversations and being a voice for people who don’t know how to speak up on their own," says Roxanne. She was brought in to create an indigenous-led second-stage recovery program with a culture-first approach. "When you connect people with their culture, that’s where healing starts," she adds.

Roxanne shares that she is Sayisi Dene, treaty 5 territory. Her mother is a residential school survivor, and because of her family's experiences, she has dedicated her life to helping other indigenous people.

"Our people were displaced from our home through a forced relocation. We went from a band of 600 to less than 200 from starvation, freezing to death, and house fires. The culture that broke us will not heal us." - Roxanne

The Difference Affordable Housing Makes

Because of Habitat's support, Roxanne can focus on her great work in the Lower Mainland. She also teaches her children the responsibilities of homeownership, debunking myths about indigenous people and housing.

Roxanne says that the best thing she can do for herself and her children now is to continue to work on herself and demonstrate what it looks like to be a healthy, spiritual, indigenous woman. Through this, she hopes to be able to help inspire and empower others and to build bridges of allyship in the community.

This Truth and Reconciliation Day, let's take actionable steps to make a difference. Your donation can empower more individuals like Roxanne to transform lives. Donate Today.

Empowering Women and Girls: Habitat for Humanity's Partnership with Benefit Cosmetics

At the crossroads of beauty and empowerment lies a unique collaboration that has the power to transform lives. Habitat for Humanity has joined forces with Benefit Cosmetics, the renowned beauty brand, to make a meaningful impact on the lives of women and girls. This partnership, fueled by the belief in the potential of education, mentorship, wellness, and economic self-sufficiency, is a shining example of how the world of cosmetics can create ripples of positive change.

Benefit Cosmetics: Beauty with a Purpose

Benefit Cosmetics, a brand synonymous with beauty, has a heart that beats for making a difference. Their annual Bold is Beautiful campaign has become a beacon of hope for organizations that champion the empowerment of women and girls. Habitat for Humanity Canada and its affiliates are proud beneficiaries of this campaign, channeling the proceeds from Benefit's waxing services to support initiatives that pave the way for brighter futures.

This year, Benefit is providing a generous donation of $20,000 towards Women Build. This contribution signifies a strong commitment to creating spaces where women can flourish, grow, and build a better future. The funds will be directed towards Women Build projects, which focus on breaking down barriers and providing women with the tools and skills they need to construct their own homes and communities.

A Day of Transformation: Benefit's Build Day at Enterprise ReStore

On October 5th, Benefit Cosmetics will bring their spirit of giving to life with a Women Build themed Build Day at Enterprise ReStore. Join us as cosmetics and construction merge to create something truly beautiful.

During this special Build Day, the Benefit team will roll up their sleeves and embark on a mission to refurbish furniture with vibrant shades of pink. This symbolic gesture not only commemorates Women Build but also embodies the essence of empowerment and strength. The repurposed pink furniture pieces will find their way into the ReStore, adding a touch of inspiration to every corner and supporting the ongoing mission of Habitat for Humanity.

Join Us in Making a Difference

This collaboration between Habitat for Humanity and Benefit Cosmetics is a testament to the profound impact that can be achieved when organizations align their values and visions. As the month of August unfolds, we invite you to stand with us in support of this partnership. One Year With Habitat | Naveen and Nithya’s Story

Naveen with Bianca as she holds the key to her family’s new home in Richmond.

Naveen and his young family have found happiness in Richmond as a Partner Family with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver.

He arrived in 2017 and rented a single room in a shared house. While functional for a season, Naveen’s housing situation needed to change once he got married.

His wife, Nithya, came to join him in Canada in 2019. They tried to make the single bedroom work but it was a challenge. After a few months, they were able to find a new place to rent that had a private bathroom and kitchen. The additional privacy was a huge help to their mental health, but the space was still small. They had no laundry in the unit and Naveen was working two jobs to help pay the bills with only one day off a week.

After they had their first daughter, things became even more challenging. Without any family in Canada, they had no support and had to manage on their own.

“It was really hard for us,” Naveen explains. “My daughter Bianca already had no room to play. Then my wife became pregnant with our second, Ivanka.”

Naveen knew he would need to find a bigger space to live. Because he used to live in Saskatchewan, he considered going back there. He enjoyed the prairie community and felt it would be impossible to ever get a house in Richmond. But after talking with one of his friends, he learned about Habitat for Humanity and the Partner Family housing program. The option to exit the rental cycle move into an affordable home was an excellent way to stay in Richmond, the city he had come to love.

“When I do something, if the probability is really low, I won’t try it,” says Naveen. “But when I was looking at this opportunity, I had a good feeling.”

Naveen followed that good feeling, applied, and was accepted to the program in 2022. They are now happily living in a brand new, two-bedroom home with not only a garden and in-suite laundry, but also a community of other Habitat Partner Families right next door.

“Now we have a backyard and more space,” says Naveen. “We planted an apple tree and now we see apples. I can garden, plant vegetables. I love planting in the summers. We have flowers on the side too. It’s so nice to be out. I have no words to explain, but I love it.”

Naveen says that from a young age, his dad taught him the value of giving back to others.

“If you give back, it will come back to you,” Naveen explains, adding that it’s one of the things he likes at the work that Habitat does. “It’s all about people helping people. No one sees it all, it takes lots of forms. Donors don’t have to help, but they do. My whole family is thankful. Without donors, this wouldn’t be possible.”

One year after taking possession of their Habitat home, Naveen and his family are thriving. They have a home in the city they love, a community to support them, and an opportunity to save.

“I want to live a peaceful happy life. Having a little family, its cute, I’m happy. Saving a bit. Here I am right now, peaceful job, peaceful family, everything is good. I’m really thankful for Habitat,” Naveen explains, adding that he wishes more opportunities like this existed in Canada so more families could benefit.

Home Sweet Home at Long Last

In 2018, Rowena had spent several months looking for a new home for her and her son, Justin. At the time, they were living in a one-bedroom condo in Vancouver so they could be closer to Rowena’s work, but the situation had become increasingly difficult for them when they discovered that the unit was infested with rodents.

“I was glad in the morning when it was time for us to go to school and work, and I would dread coming home,” says Rowena.

Safety was a serious concern, as they could hear the sounds of mice scratching and crawling around the condo at night while they tried to sleep. Her son was eight years old at the time and was terrified. The two of them would end up sleeping together most nights.

But as much as she wanted to find a new place to rent, they were unable to relocate as prices were far out of range for her on a single-household income.

Unexpected Encounter With Hope

It was April 2018 when Rowena and her coworkers decided to volunteer at a Habitat for Humanity build project in Richmond.

“When I first came here, it was just the foundation. We were putting up pieces of wood to build the frame of these houses,” says Rowena, who had no idea that she was standing on the spot that would one day be her home.

After that first day of volunteering, Rowena found herself inspired by the work that Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver has been doing in the Lower Mainland. She wasn’t sure if she would qualify as a candidate for a home, but she figured she would apply.

It took some time to process everything, but after a year, Rowena and her coworkers were invited back for another build day. She was impressed by how much had been built in the time since she was last there. As she worked with her colleagues on the site, she was greeted by a staff member from Habitat who announced to everyone that Rowena would be one of the lucky five families who had been selected to receive a home at this location.

“It was so fantastic,” says Rowena. “I remember the emotions on that day. Everyone was cheering! I was so surprised. It was so emotional and it really touched me inside, knowing what the next step was going to be for me and my son. It was the best feeling. I’ll never forget it.”

On July 1st, 2019, Rowena and Justin moved into a beautiful two-bedroom suite in one of the houses that she herself helped build!

It Takes a Village

In many ways, this was a dream come true. No longer would Rowena have to worry about rodents, feeling unsafe in her own home, or wondering what the future would be for her son. They each had their own room, there was a backyard, other kids in a community who Justin could play with, a park nearby, his school within walking distance, and a community of other families right next door. Rowena knew this was going to be the best place for Justin to grow into a young man.

“In my experience with this community, the whole ‘it takes a village’ really does mean something,” says Rowena as she reflects on the community around them. “We watch each other’s kids. If we’re away, there’s always someone watching our place. We also learn a lot from each other. I wasn’t much of a gardener before but some of my friends in this community are and I’ve learned a lot from them.”

Another aspect of the community that has been so meaningful for Rowena was the support she received during the COVID-19 pandemic. As everyone was isolated in their homes, she was so grateful to have a safe and comfortable place to be with Justin.

“During the pandemic, I could not imagine what it would have been like in our little one-bedroom apartment, with mice in the walls, not being able to go out. Here, we could go outside, with the backyard.”

Affordable Homes Change Lives

As she reflects on the journey that led her to this place, Rowena says she is overcome with gratitude and joy. The experience was life-changing for them both and has given Rowena hope in a time when she was feeling trapped.

“Without the donors out there… families like myself and my friends in this community would not have a safe affordable place to live,” says Rowena. “I am so thankful.”

Van Belle Donates Thousands of Plants to ReStore

Habitat For Humanity Greater Vancouver is set to receive an incredible donation of thousands of plants to be given away for free to customers of ReStores across the Lower Mainland, thanks to the generosity of Van Belle Nursery. Each of the six ReStores will have approximately 4,500 plants available from June 9-11, 2023.

“We were inspired to donate these plants to Habitat for Humanity because we truly appreciate the incredible work they do,” says Del Bianco, Director of Operations for Van Belle. “Their commitment to building homes and communities is remarkable and we want to contribute to their mission in any way we can. Rather than discarding healthy plants that would otherwise go to waste, we'd like to see them put to good use... creating welcoming and nurturing environments for families.”

The available plants are four-inch shrubs and are of the following variety:

  1. Spiraea Poprocks Petite

  1. Diervilla Nightglow

  1. Hydrangea Candelabra

  1. Physocarpus Panther

This is not the first time Van Belle has made a generous donation like this. According to Bianco, they actively seek opportunities to donate to non-profits and charitable organizations in the Lower Mainland. Habitat For Humanity and its mission to provide safe and affordable housing for families appeals to Van Belle

“We believe in the importance of giving back to the community and supporting organizations that are making a positive impact—especially in our own backyard,” says Bianco. “We fully support Habitat's mission… Their work is instrumental in building stronger communities and creating opportunities for a brighter future.”

When asked if they have any advice or instruction for ReStore customers taking home these free plants, Bianco says, “Nurturing plants is a rewarding experience. Give them water, sunlight, and a bit of love, and you'll see them thrive and grow beautifully for your enjoyment. Plants are proven to improve mental and physical wellbeing and we're grateful for any opportunity to spread that kind of positivity. And once again, thanks for supporting our efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability. Happy planting!”

Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver Receives Environment & Sustainability Award

Eleven local Habitat affiliates were honored at Habitat for Humanity Canada’s National Conference for their remarkable efforts and accomplishments in 2022 toward making a significant impact in their communities. Among them, the Greater Vancouver affiliate was honored with the Environment & Sustainability Award.

This esteemed recognition highlights our affiliate's commitment to building environmentally responsible homes and promoting sustainability. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver has achieved remarkable results in our building program, surpassing the province's Step Code 3 for all new projects. Our dedication to energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions has set us apart as leaders in sustainable housing.

The recent completion of our 19-unit build showcased impressive third-party testing results, including lower levels of noise and odour emissions. Our focus on energy software modeling and onsite testing enables us to design homes with optimized materials that perform efficiently. Moreover, the decision to forego natural gas in our projects aligns with the commitment we’ve made to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver was recognized as a leader in the field of deconstruction. Through a partnership with the City of Vancouver, we have established the Rebuild Hub—a project that salvages usable materials from construction sites for resale through our network of ReStores throughout the Lower Mainland. This initiative not only reduces waste but also promotes a circular economy and sustainable resource management.

The Environment & Sustainability Award recognizes our affiliate's unwavering dedication to incorporating environmentally responsible practices into our building program. Our innovative approach and commitment to sustainability contributes to creating safe, affordable, and sustainable housing options for families in the Greater Vancouver area.

We are honoured to be recognized for our efforts toward setting an example of environmental stewardship and sustainable building practices. It is our goal to continue to make a significant impact on the community, one home at a time.
