Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver Receives Environment & Sustainability Award
Eleven local Habitat affiliates were honored at Habitat for Humanity Canada’s National Conference for their remarkable efforts and accomplishments in 2022 toward making a significant impact in their communities. Among them, the Greater Vancouver affiliate was honored with the Environment & Sustainability Award.
This esteemed recognition highlights our affiliate's commitment to building environmentally responsible homes and promoting sustainability. Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver has achieved remarkable results in our building program, surpassing the province's Step Code 3 for all new projects. Our dedication to energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions has set us apart as leaders in sustainable housing.
The recent completion of our 19-unit build showcased impressive third-party testing results, including lower levels of noise and odour emissions. Our focus on energy software modeling and onsite testing enables us to design homes with optimized materials that perform efficiently. Moreover, the decision to forego natural gas in our projects aligns with the commitment we’ve made to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition, Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver was recognized as a leader in the field of deconstruction. Through a partnership with the City of Vancouver, we have established the Rebuild Hub—a project that salvages usable materials from construction sites for resale through our network of ReStores throughout the Lower Mainland. This initiative not only reduces waste but also promotes a circular economy and sustainable resource management.
The Environment & Sustainability Award recognizes our affiliate's unwavering dedication to incorporating environmentally responsible practices into our building program. Our innovative approach and commitment to sustainability contributes to creating safe, affordable, and sustainable housing options for families in the Greater Vancouver area.
We are honoured to be recognized for our efforts toward setting an example of environmental stewardship and sustainable building practices. It is our goal to continue to make a significant impact on the community, one home at a time.
